A letter to you

Why I Understand Your Journey

You are not alone. I've walked this path too.

Before we talk about anything else, I want to ask you something quietly.

  • “Why is parenting so hard when I love my child so much?”
  • “Why do all the parenting techniques seem to work for everyone else except my child?”
  • “Why does every day feel like I'm putting out one fire after another?”

If any of those questions live in your chest at the end of a long day, you are in the right place. I asked all three of them for years, usually at 11pm and usually in tears.

Before I was a mother, I solved problems for a living

I spent my career in IT. Systems, logic, root-cause analysis. Give me a problem, enough data and a little time, and I would find the answer. That was who I was, and quietly, that was what I was proud of.

So when I became a mother, I assumed the same rules would apply. Read enough. Learn enough. Try hard enough. Love hard enough. The answer would come.

Then parenting refused to follow the manual

The books were confident. The advice was everywhere. Stay consistent. Set firm boundaries. Use this reward chart. Count to three.

My child experienced the world differently, more intensely and more sensitively, on a rhythm the books had never met. Every strategy that was supposed to work simply didn't. Not because I wasn't trying, but because the advice was written for a child who wasn't mine.

And then came the judgement

The looks in the supermarket aisle. The comment at the family gathering that was meant kindly and landed like a stone. The teacher's careful phrasing. The silence from people who had opinions but didn't say them out loud.

The hardest judge was me. I would replay the day after everyone was asleep and take myself apart. Why couldn't I stay calm? Why did I raise my voice again? What is wrong with my child, and what does it say about me?

I tried everything, and I was so tired

I tried every method I could find. New routines. New charts. New tones of voice. Some of them worked for three days. None of them worked for three weeks.

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from loving someone completely and still feeling like you are failing them. I lived in that place for a long time, wondering, honestly, whether I was simply not good enough at being this child's mother.

I wasn't failing. I was asking the wrong question with all my heart, over and over again.

The turning point

Everything changed when the question changed

“How do I change my child?”

“What is my child trying to tell me?”

It sounds small. It wasn't. That one shift moved me out of the role of manager and into the role of parent again.

Behaviour stopped being a problem to be corrected and became a message to be understood. The meltdown wasn't defiance. It was overwhelm. The refusal wasn't disrespect. It was fear. The distance wasn't rejection. It was self-protection.

Nothing about my child changed overnight. But I did. And slowly, so did our home.

What I discovered

Acceptance. Connection & Belonging. Empathy.

Rooted entirely in the principles of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) developed by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, these ideas changed how I relate to my child and myself.

Acceptance

I learned to meet my child, and myself, exactly where we were, without judgment or the pressure of perfection.

Connection & Belonging

I learned to choose relationship over power struggles and create a home where every emotion could be welcomed.

Empathy

I learned to listen for the unspoken need beneath every outburst, reaction, and behaviour.

The day I stopped trying to fix my child was the day I started to understand them.

I'm not standing in front of you. I'm walking beside you.

I don't come to you as an expert with all the answers. I come as someone who has sat where you are sitting, at the end of a hard day, wondering if tomorrow will be any different.

Every tool, reflection and lesson inside The Connected Parent Companion was built from lived experience, years of learning and coaching, and time spent walking alongside hundreds of parents who were just as tired and just as loving as you are.

Nothing in here will ask you to perform. It will only ask you to look at your child a little differently, for five quiet minutes a day.

And here is what I most want you to know

You don't need to become a perfect parent.

You don't need to have all the answers.

You simply need someone to walk beside you while you discover a different way of seeing your child.

If you're here, you've already taken the hardest step. Welcome. Let's begin this journey together.
